π‘ Understanding Calorie Density
Calorie density = total calories Γ· weight in grams. Foods range from very low density (<0.6 kcal/g β fruits, vegetables, broth) to very high density (>4 kcal/g β oils, butter, nuts). Eating more low-density foods lets you eat larger volumes while consuming fewer calories.
Volumetric eating (pioneered by Dr. Barbara Rolls) is based on this concept. By filling your plate with low-density foods, you feel fuller on fewer calories. Water and fiber reduce calorie density.
Apple: 52 kcal per 100g = 0.52 kcal/g (Very Low). Chocolate: 535 kcal per 100g = 5.35 kcal/g (High). Same volume, 10Γ the calories.
