💡 The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
Published in 1990 by Mifflin, St Jeor, et al. Men: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age − 5 + 5. Women: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age − 161. The '+5 / −161' difference accounts for the sex-based metabolic difference.
A 2005 review by the American Dietetic Association found this equation to be the most accurate for predicting BMR in both normal weight and obese individuals, within 10% of measured BMR for 82% of people.
Male, 70 kg, 170 cm, 30 years: BMR = 10(70) + 6.25(170) − 5(30) + 5 = 1,596 kcal/day.
